Case Studies
The Situation
The watch had stopped running roughly twelve years earlier. The owner's family had not had it serviced since the 1980s and were unsure whether the movement was repairable or whether all original parts were still present.
What Was Done
The movement was carefully disassembled and assessed. The mainspring had fatigued but remained original. Parts were cleaned individually and lubricated. The crown mechanism needed adjustment. Original components were retained throughout.
The Outcome
The watch runs again with good amplitude. A written condition note was included with a few practical care suggestions. The owner collects it now and plans to have it regulated once worn regularly for a few weeks.
The Situation
The owner's concern was entirely cosmetic — the dial had yellowed slightly and the seconds hand sat at a very slight angle. She was worried that cleaning might damage the aged dial or alter the character of the piece.
What Was Done
A Hand & Dial Tidy was carried out. The crystal was removed and cleaned from the inside. The dial was gently attended to without altering its patina. The seconds hand was removed, inspected, and reseated at the correct position.
The Outcome
The watch reads clearly and the hands run straight. The aged character of the dial was preserved. The owner noted that it looked "like itself again, just easier to read" — which was exactly what she had hoped for.
The Situation
The watch had been stored in a box since the owner's retirement. The bracelet had become stiff and difficult to open, the clasp had minor corrosion, and the case had accumulated grime around the pushers and crown.
What Was Done
A Comfort & Wear Refit was carried out. The bracelet was cleaned link by link and its articulation restored. The clasp was serviced. The case was cleaned and lightly polished in a way that retained its existing wear rather than making it look new.
The Outcome
The watch has been in daily use since collection. The owner came back two weeks later to ask for the bracelet to be shortened by one link — which was done quickly at no extra charge.
